Cities and Rivers

A city will
rip a river off a mountain
stretch it, flatten it
pull it to it's lips to suck
its opportunity and commerce.
All to make the million faced
diamond of a city day.

A river
favors appeasement
negotiating every bend
giving in to rocks
and tree stumps
jetties and islands
until reaching the sea
it gets its way.

Long ago
in the time before
writing, humans stood
on the side of the river
and looking into the
river saw in themselves
a city.
